He has been criticized (especially in Italy) for "lowering Opera to commercial level" While there is some point to be made about him singing with "Spice Girls" (what the heck was he thinking) overall, I think he did great things to Opera. Specially for our kids submerged in RAP, only with people like him Opera will be still alive for the next 10-50 years.
Apparently his fame was in major part made by effortlessly and beautifully entering the high range of man voice ...
